Many bettors carry this out and then leave a site, so why are the sportsbooks so keen on trying to provide the best sports betting offers? Why, if bettors spend so little time on their website, are there so many betting promotions lined up on their own, dedicated page? Further offers are sent directly to customers, so are the sportsbooks wasting their time?
It’s all about providing extra value, and if those customers were to stop for a while and take a look at what’s on offer, they could be in line for some generous boosts and bonuses. But what form do these sports betting bonus offers take, and how can you claim them? These betting deals take many forms, and some will start when you sign up for a new account while others are available on a daily basis. There are many ways to find them, too, so read on for our comprehensive guide to making the most from bookmakers’ promotions.

How to Get a Betting Promotion
These offers are not compulsory, and it’s down to the individual customer to decide whether to take them up. Sometimes, the best sports betting bonus is loaded automatically, and you can see it on the top bookmakers’ homepage or, it’s offered to you when you add a bet to your betslip. Other times, you may need to enter a promo code for the betting bonus that you need to find on the betting site or their social media platforms, or you may receive one in your inbox.
To find out about regular sports betting bonus deals , it’s important to follow your bookmaker on social media and to sign up for any newsletter feeds. Allow them to send SMS messages, too, as many betting promotions are sent via text.
The New Customer Betting Offers – It All Starts with the Welcome Bonus
Offers begin at the very start of a relationship, and the vast majority of bookmakers now offer a sports betting sign-up bonus. This is by far the most popular type of bonus, and it’s offered at almost every good betting site.
A sign-up sports betting deal can take a number of forms. Many offers will match a customer’s opening deposit and add bonus funds to their new account. These betting sites’ deposit offers can vary between 50% to 100% or possibly even higher, but the thing to look for is the monetary value of the upper limit. Those with £100.00 on the table or more will offer the best sports betting bonus in this respect.
The Wagering Requirements to Keep in Mind
Players should check all terms and conditions relating to sports betting bonus offers, but one of the most important points to look for is a wagering requirement. This can also be referred to as a rollover, and it requires the customer to play through the amount of their deposit and/or bonus a certain number of times before any profits can be withdrawn.
As an example, let’s say you have deposited £50.00 with a sportsbook and they have matched that figure by 100%, giving you a total of £100.00. The bookmaker in question then states that there is a 7x wagering requirement. That means that you will have to stake £700.00 in qualifying bets before you can withdraw any subsequent profits.
As a further point to note here, the bookmaker in question is also likely to apply rules on the bets that you make and the length of time you have in which to complete the betting bonus rollover. Once again, the exact details will vary, but typically, you might expect to make bets at minimum odds of 4/6 and to complete the cycle within 30 days.
Another issue to consider when looking for betting account offers in the UK is that sometimes the bookies may have requirements for the type of payment method you use to make your first deposit. For example, certain sites may not accept deposits made via e-wallets such as Skrill as qualifying for their deposit match offer.
The Oh-So Rare No-Deposit Bonus
On some very rare occasions, a bookmaker may offer a sports betting sign-up bonus that doesn’t require the customer to make any deposit. These are becoming increasingly rare but some remain, and they are worth looking out for.
These betting account offers with no deposit deal with small sums of money – usually £5.00 – and there are a number of limitations and conditions attached. They will also tend to come with very high rollover requirements so refer back to the previous section for the guide as to how these work.
In summary, it may be quite hard to withdraw any profits from a no-deposit sports betting bonus, but this is essentially free money, and a good approach is to use it to become accustomed to a bookmaker’s website before getting involved with a financial commitment of your own.
And the Not-So-Rare Free Bets
Another form of sports betting sign up bonus will issue a series of free bets. The monetary amounts here can be lower, but on the plus side, they are very quick and easy to use. Typically, a bookmaker may ask new players to open an account, deposit £10.00 and make a qualifying bet at the same figure.
Once that opening bet has been settled, a series of free bet tokens – usually between £20.00 and £30.00 – will be sent back to the account holder. Free bets can also be issued at any time during the life of an account, and are some of the most popular mobile betting offers for existing customers. We’ve just seen how they can appear when a customer signs up for a new account but what else can the average bettor expect?
Different Types of Free Bets
Free bets can be issued in a number of sports and on a number of possible outcomes. We’ve seen how they can be used as part of a sign-up sports betting bonus, but once you’ve signed up for an account, there are many deals available on an ongoing basis.
A recent introduction to the list is widely known as a free bet club. This is among the best sports betting bonus systems around as it rewards loyalty in a big way. Terms will vary depending on which bookmaker is involved but typically, you might bet £25.00 each week and get a free bet of £5.00 when you complete the qualifying cycle.
Elsewhere, many free bet offers are tailored to accumulator bets commonly known as Acca Insurance deals. Betting accumulator offers would typically pay out if one leg of a straight line multiple fails to come in.
Other free bet offers can come in for a host of one-off bets. Bookmakers are getting more creative now so we might see free bet tokens returned in football’s Correct Score market if the game finishes 0-0. Alternatively, a common horse racing offer returns free bets if your horse loses out to the favourite.

Terms and Conditions of Free Bets
Bookmakers will have different terms and conditions, but across the sportsbooks, there are certain things to look out for. When we talk about free bets as the best sports betting bonus, we are actually referring to a free bet token. The bookmaker in question won’t issue a free bet as a cash sum so you can’t withdraw it, but you can use that token for another bet.
Look out to see if there are any minimum of maximum odds requirements, but perhaps the most important point is expiry dates. With some bookies, you may have up to 7 days in which to use a free bet token, but with others, the short shelf life may be reduced to 4 days.
Can Free Bets Winnings Be Withdrawn?
With a free bet token, there is unlikely to be any wagering requirements but do check this point under terms and conditions just in case. Therefore, you should be able to withdraw any profits that you make from a free bet.
The important point to note with sports betting bonus offers of this kind is that your stake is not returned with any winnings. Only the profit is paid back into your account, and the amount of the token would be excluded.
More Online Betting Promotions
It’s easy to find the best sports betting bonuses around, and they are certainly worth looking out for. The benefits will hopefully now be obvious, and the main aim for each bookmaker is to keep you coming back to their site. To do this, they offer betting promotions that provide much more value.
Event Specific Bonuses
Many of the best sports betting offers will appear when the big sporting events appear on the calendar. We’re talking about, among others, the FA Cup Final, Wimbledon Tennis, Six Nations Rugby, any of golf’s Majors or any world cup tournament for high-profile sports.
The betting promotions that drop in at this time will be very specific: for example, maybe there will be a big enhanced odds deal on the British Open golf if Tiger Woods finishes in the Top Ten. With that in mind, bookies’ promotions pages need to be checked whenever these big events come along.
Acca Insurances
We’ve briefly touched on Acca Insurances, but these are widespread offers now, so it’s worth mentioning them again. These will typically work when you pick a straight line multi of four bets or more. If all four picks come in, then you collect a profit in the usual way, but if just one loses, a refund of your stake will be made. The limit can be between £10.00 and £25.00, and those refunds are usually made as free bet tokens.
Cashout Can Make a Big Difference
This is a fairly new introduction to the list of sports betting offers, but it’s proving to be very popular. To take advantage, punters need to place a bet, let’s say on Liverpool to win a football match at 2/1. Maybe Liverpool are winning with ten minutes to go: at this point, the bookmaker in question may offer a cashout option at reduced odds of Even Money.
That’s just one example of where cashout can be claimed, and there are countless others with most sportsbooks now picking it up.
Cross-Platform Bonus
Most sportsbooks also have a casino side to their operation. Separate poker and bingo sites exist too, and this is where a cross-platform bonus applies. As an example, a sportsbook may send an email or SMS which offers a set of free spins at their casino.
Cross-platform offers can take different forms, and the best way to spot them is to sign up for email and text notifications.
Reload Bonuses
A reload refers to a second deposit – one that is made after you set up an account and add some initial funds. Once you’ve taken up your first sports betting sign up offer, the bookmaker in question will then add a follow-up offer on your second deposit. Once again, this may come in the form of a matched depositor; it can be a series of free bet tokens.
Betting Cashback Offers
A cashback offer is very distinct, and the offers work in completely separate ways. With cash back, you will receive a reward depending on your deposits and how much you play.
This is another type of offer where the terms will vary, but perhaps, there will be a 5% cashback if you bet £500.00 or more in a certain week. As the name would suggest, you should expect to receive bonus funds as a straight cash payment as opposed to free bet tokens.
Live Betting Offers
In-play betting is one of the success stories of the digital age, and a number of betting promotions are tailored to the live markets. Once again these are varied, and they can usually be found on the promotions page of the bookmaker in question.
Offers may be similar to the free bet club where tokens are awarded every week when you hit certain staking requirements. Others may just list a small free bet for your first live stake, but many bookies are now offering specific promos for in-play betting.
Mobile Bonus
Playing on mobile is becoming increasingly popular too, and once again, this is an area where the bookies are targeting. A sports betting bonus here can sometimes be issued, and all it takes is for the customer to download the app. The sums involved here are quite small – usually set at £5.00 – but this is a quick and simple way to get involved with betting on the go.
Referral Bonus
Lots of e-commerce sites publish a “refer a friend” offer, and the betting industry is no exception. Not all sportsbooks do this but there is a growing number who get involved, and the rewards can be generous at times.
Some bookies may issue a straight cash payment or maybe a free bet token which could be worth up to £20.00. On very rare occasions, a percentage of your referral’s stakes may be sent back, but this is less likely.
Best Odds Guaranteed
A best odds guaranteed system can vary depending on the sport involved. It’s most commonly seen in horse racing, and it works in the following way:
Bettors take an ante-post bet at a certain price, and the horse wins: If the race is run and the winning SP odds are longer than that ante-post figure, the bookmaker will pay out at the longer of the two.
Alternatively, a bookmaker may guarantee their odds on any other sport and state that they will match prices found elsewhere.

Loyalty Programs and VIP Bonuses
As we’ve seen, a number of bookmakers are starting to introduce loyalty programmes. These have been around for a while, but the weekly free bet club deals are really starting to gather momentum.
Loyalty has always been rewarded by those bookmakers who quote ongoing promotions. These deals can be used on a daily basis, and if you bet on certain multiples or on the sports that they relate to, this is another way to reward loyalty.
At the top end of the scale, it’s worth aiming for a VIP loyalty programme if you can. These are for high rollers, and there could be weekly stakes of £500.00 involved. However, cash rewards are much higher too, so these are certainly worth a look.
FAQs
Q: Can I receive a deposit bonus even though I already have an account with the bookmaker in question?
- The short answer to this question is ‘no.’ Bookmakers stipulate that their sports betting welcome bonus is only available to one member of a household and it’s a one-time-only deal. Duplicate accounts will be rejected.
Q: I’ve not received my sign-up offer, what should I do?
- In the first instance, check that you have met all of the requirements set under terms and conditions. Points to note include checking you have met the minimum deposit and you have not used any excluded funding methods. When you are sure you have complied, raise the query with the bookmaker’s customer services.
Q: Can I combine deposit bonuses with other promotions at the bookmaker?
- A sports betting sign up bonus is a one-off deal for customers who register for a new account. It’s not repeatable, and bookmakers stipulate under terms and conditions that it cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotion.
Now You Know All About Betting Sites and Their Offers
There are indeed lots of advantages with this type of sports betting bonus. Depending on the type of betting promotion, odds boost could give higher returns. Free bet tokens could give the customer a second chance of landing a profit, and in every case, there is the chance to earn some extra cash.
There are some potential downsides with these betting promotions, and the most obvious of these is the wagering requirement. If you’re just looking to get in quickly and claim a quick deal, then this may not be for you as the rollover requires significant extra stakes. However, the experienced and dedicated punter may be happy enough to play through the additional requirement.
There may also be limited markets for an offer; football attracts the most deals, so if you don’t like to bet here, then you may find that your bookie doesn’t offer too much additional choice. There is also a question of validity and short expiry dates of the promos themselves.
Overall, the advantages do outweigh the disadvantages, and that’s why you’ll see the most experienced of bettors looking to make the most from sports betting sites’ offers and promotions.
Ultimately, it’s all about choice. No sportsbook is forcing their customers to accept an offer so they can either take it up or simply decline it. The important point is to check all terms and conditions and for the individual to decide whether or not the offer is right for them. Keep that in mind, and you can find the best sports betting offer to meet your needs.

Offers For Existing Customers
Whilst the new customer offers offers can only be claimed when registering – and thus limited to one per person – they are usually the most lucrative, often offering bonuses worth up to six times your deposit and qualifying bet.
However, as well as offering free bets to tempt in new customers, some betting sites also offer loyalty programs to their existing customers. These rewards come in a variety of shapes and sizes but tend to fit into one of two categories:
- Free Bet Clubs – Normally these run on a weekly basis and award bonuses when you place a set number of bets. For example, if you bet £25 in a week you may be eligible to receive a £10 free bet. The requirements of these offers vary wildly, so make sure you read the terms and conditions to see if you need to opt in or enter a code, and check for eligible bets and minimum odds.
- Loyalty Points – Whilst free bet clubs tend to be limited to one per week, loyalty points are less restrictive. These work just like other points schemes (think of them like air miles for betting) and are accrued as you bet. You can then swap them for bonuses, cash or spend them in a special points shop. Many also have multiple tiers where the rewards get better the more points you collect.
Betting Offers Explained
Most bookmakers offer free bets these days, but they aren’t going to just hand over free cash without some kind of condition attached. This article should help you to understand everything you need to know about free bets and betting bonus offers.
The Qualifying Bet/Deposit
Except in the very rare case of a no deposit free bet, most betting sites require you to make a deposit and bet a certain amount before you receive your free bet. So if the bookie is offering a £25 matched bet, this usually means you need to deposit and place a bet worth £25 before you receive your free one.
The actual requirements and terms vary from site to site, so make sure you read the conditions before taking up any offer so that you know exactly what you’ve signed up for. Don’t set yourself up for a disappointment.
Qualifying Odds
Many sites require your qualifying bet (the one you initially place to get the free bet) and/or the free bet to be placed at odds greater than a minimum value – this will be set in the terms and conditions and is to stop you betting on ‘sure things’ just to get the free bet.
The minimum odds vary but are usually somewhere around ‘evens’ (ie: 1/1) which is 2.0 in decimal odds. You’ll need to place your bet at these odds or greater to qualify.
So in the case of “Evens or greater” you could place a bet at Evens (2.0 in decimal) or 2/1 (3.0 in decimals) or 100/1 if you wanted.
Is The Free Bet Stake Returned?
This is an important factor to consider when comparing free bets. Some sites will return the free bet stake with your winnings, whilst others will not. A £25 free bet with the stake returned has a greater value than a £25 free bet where the stake isn’t returned.
Read The Terms & Conditions
Before taking a free bet you need to read the terms and conditions of the offer – don’t assume that it will be the same as another betting site, or even that it will be the same as a previous free bet from the same bookie, things often change. If you don’t understand the conditions, ask the support team – the last thing you want is to win big only to have it voided because you didn’t stick to the conditions.

How to get the Most Out of Your Bonus
One of the biggest mistakes that we see when it comes to betting offers is people claiming the bonus without knowing the ins and outs of how they work. A lot of offers come with a plethora of terms and conditions, but the details of these offers and what’s needed from a punters point of view has been simplified significantly over the last few years.
Maxing out the Bonus
A key area that needs to be addressed is to make sure you are able to max out the bonus. Generally, the bonus will only become a ‘good offer’ if you are able to take the full amount; after all, a betting site is offering you free money, you’d be mad not to take it all, right?
A lot of bonuses and the amount that you can claim is going to be dependent on each given bookmaker. We’ve spoken previously about how easy it is to set up a betting site and how a lot of these sites are quite generic when it comes to design, but the bonus is something that is solely dependent on the individual bookmaker.
Claiming the full amount from each bookmaker essentially means you’re getting the best deal possible. There will be times where it’s not possible to claim the full amount, mainly because you can’t afford to do so, and this is fine, but we strongly recommend that whereever possible you take as much of it as you can.
Checking for Alternative Offers
The amount that a bookmaker is offering you is frequently what lures people in. For example, a bonus where they state ‘bet £10 and get £30’ looks a much better deal than a ‘bet £10 and get £20’ promotion.
It could well be the case that the bigger bonus is the better offer, but the reality is that it’s all dependent on the terms for that offer. You see, with each offer there will be a number of terms that you need to adhere to in order to get your money. We’ve highlighted some of the more common ones below:
- Minimum stake – The lowest amount you need to stake to trigger the offer.
- Follow up bets – Often bookmakers will state that you need to make ‘x’ number of bets after your initial deposit to trigger your bonus.
- Clearance rates/wagering – This is the amount of times you need to play through your bonus before you are to withdraw the money.
- Stake returned/ not returned – Some bonuses will offer you your original stake back with any winnings from that bet.
- Country restrictions – Some bonuses are only available to player within certain territories.
It’s for the above reasons that you need to make sure you check all available offers that are eligible to you. As a punter you’re in the driving seat, and it’s the bookmakers who are doing all they can to get you to choose them over a competitor.
These days there are hundreds of bookmakers – some better than others – which allows you to shop around and find the best deal that suits you. Take your time and compare some of the bonuses already on this page, along with a brief look at the terms for each and decide what works best. What might work best for you, might not necessarily work best for someone else, and vice-verse.
Choosing Your Bet
You’ve made the decision as to which offer you are going to take so the next step is to work out what type of bet is going to offer you the best returns. A key aspect that we’ve mentioned a couple of times already is whether or not you get the stake returned as part of your free bet. This will obviously affect your returns. Have a look at these examples:
- Let’s assume that you were betting with a non-stake returned freebie. Your bet was £10 at odds of even money. If you placed this bet 10 times then you’d expect a return of £50, assuming you won 50% of your bets, which at even money you should, by the law of chance anyway.
- If you placed 1 x £10 bet at odds of 9/1, still no stake returned, you’d statistically win this 1 in 9 times making your returns £90.
- Let’s flip these two scenarios and assume this time that your stake is returned. You place 10 bets of £10 at odds of even money. You win 5 of them making your total returns £100 (£50 winnings plus £50 in stakes).
- Alternatively, you place 1 x £10 bet at odds of 9/1, this time with stake returned, winning in 1 in 9 times with a return of £100.
Still with us? Good!
The outcome shows that the bet you should be placing is massively dependent on whether you get your stake back or not. Simply put, if you do, shoot for lower odds giving you a higher return and if you don’t then shoot for higher odds maximizing your return.
Assume £10 stake for each from table below.
Odds | Stake Returned? | Returns | No. of bets to make £100+ | Stake Returned? | Returns | No. of bets to make £100+ |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1/2 | No | £5 | 20 | Yes | £15 | 7 |
Evens | No | £10 | 10 | Yes | £20 | 5 |
2/1 | No | £20 | 5 | Yes | £30 | 4 |
5/1 | No | £50 | 2 | Yes | £60 | 2 |
10/1 | No | £100 | 1 | Yes | £110 | 1 |
The table above highlights that making £100 can take a widely different number of bets depending the terms. As you can see, as the odds increase the number of bets start to level out, but at the lower end you need to wager fewer bets to get to the £100 if you get your stake back.

Terms and Conditions
Most people tend to zone out when it comes to terms and conditions. Free bets and betting bonuses are notorious with being difficult to clear, often with bookies adding in pages and pages of potentially confusing terms that players must adhere to.
Best Online Betting Sign Up Deals
These days, however, the terms for most bets are about as transparent as they’ve ever been. The UK Gambling Commission have been cracking down on sites that make these offers tough or even impossible for most people to clear, so the shoe is definitely on the other foot.
Before we dive into the main things to look out for, we need to make a couple of points:
First, don’t be afraid to open the terms up with each bookmaker. They often seem much more daunting than they actually are and once you have read them a few times and start to understand them, you will know exactly what you need to do in the future.
Second, the terms that we have listed below are pretty generic and bookmakers may have their own unique twists on them. Use it as a guide for things to look out for as they will vary with each bookmaker and each promotion.

- Bonus amount – You need to know exactly how much you can claim and what you need to do in order to claim the bonus. Most are along the lines of ‘Bet £10, Get £20 free bet’, which is pretty much as it says; deposit & bet £10, and get a £20 free bet.
- Qualifying deposit – This is the amount that you need to deposit to become eligible to claim the offer. The amount will vary with each offer, but each will have a minimum. You can deposit more than the minimum amount and still claim the offer.
- Bet Time frame – You will often have a set time limit within which you must make your first bet. We’ve seen this as short as 24 hours after your first deposit and as late as 60 days.
- Settlement time frame – Like the deposit, you will often have a time limit within which the first bet needs to be settled if it is to be credited to your account. The time frame can vary quite dramatically, so veer away from anything that takes over a few days to settle, such as markets like a team to win the league or a cup winner.
- Deposit type – Due to a massive loophole years ago with payment methods such as e-wallets and pay cards, most companies these days will only allow you to claim the offer with a debit card. These payment methods may be expanded upon, but be prepared to verify your account in advance.
- Minimum odds – You will likely have minimum odds that you need to place your bet at. They range for each bookmaker but we’ve seen as low as 1.50 right up to 5.00.
- Bet types – Certain bet types will be prohibited from these offers. They may include things like accumulator bets of multiplies of some sort (Yankee’s, Lucky 15, Tote bets etc.). The flip side is that we’ve also seen more and more bookies target offers to the markets just mentioned exclusively, so make sure you check prior to betting.
- Market/sport restrictions – A lot of markets and sports are restricted as well. Again, it varies, but do bear this in mind.
- Void bets – If your bet has become void for whatever reason, more often than not you will lose you free bet. Your bet will be settled as void though, which means that you get your stake back but not your free bet.
- Cashed out bets – Cashed out bets will also void the majority of free bets these days. It’s to stop people simply betting, claiming the free bet and then just cashing out their original bet, essentially getting money for nothing.
- Use of free bets/ bonuses – You will have a certain amount of time to use your free bets once they have been issued. Time frames will vary, but usually sit around the 7 day mark.

As we have stated previously, this list certainly isn’t exhaustive, but it should give you a pretty good idea of what to look out for. One final bit of advice, make sure you take the time to read through these terms before signing up to the bookmaker. Each promotion works differently and some are more suited to certain players than others.
If you still need help, most reputable bookmakers have a solid customer support base that you can contact and find out all you need to know.
